Known as the most renowned eco-tourism zone of Corbett National Park, Dhikala is blessed with rich wildlife and breathtaking views, making it a paradise for nature and adventure seekers. Apart from the famous day Canter safari that showcases the zone’s biodiversity, visitors also get the unique privilege of an overnight stay inside forest rest houses. Among them, Dhikala and Gairal Forest Rest Houses are the most sought-after, offering an unforgettable wilderness experience. The excitement of spending a night in the heart of the forest is what truly attracts wildlife enthusiasts to these FRHs.
After Dhikala, Gairal Rest House is considered the finest accommodation option in the Dhikala Zone. Nestled deep in the wilderness, this forest home offers serenity and charm, far from the noise and commotion of the city. Located about 13 km from Dhangarhi Gate (entry to Dhikala) and around 40 km from Ramnagar, the FRH is surrounded by solar-powered fencing to protect the premises from wild animals. Its peaceful setting in the heart of the forest creates a soothing atmosphere, making it an ideal retreat for refreshing the mind and soul.
Situated along the banks of the Ramganga River, the FRH presents spectacular views of the riverbed and a chance to witness wildlife activity. Tigers are often spotted here as they come to drink water or hunt, while herds of elephants frequently gather to drink, bathe, and play. For bird lovers, the surroundings offer excellent opportunities for spotting both resident and migratory species, making it a true paradise for birdwatching and wildlife observation.
Dining at Gairal Forest Rest House :
Dining at Gairal FRH is simple yet satisfying. A GMVN-run canteen provides basic meals with a limited menu. While you won’t find elaborate multi-cuisine spreads, the food served here is homely, tasty, and filling. Guests can also purchase snacks and bottled water. Please note that non-vegetarian food and alcohol are strictly prohibited within the rest house premises.
How and When to Visit Gairal FRH :
The rest house is open for tourists from 15th November to 15th June every year. Outside of this period, it remains closed due to unfavorable weather conditions. To stay at Gairal FRH, advance online booking is mandatory. Reservations can be made up to 45 days in advance for Indian visitors and up to 90 days for foreign nationals. Entry is via Dhangarhi Gate, which lies about 18 km from Ramnagar. To access the park, you must hire an authorized safari jeep and a registered guide.
Summer Season - March to June :
Summer in this region lasts from March until mid-June. During this period, temperatures can soar up to 40°C, making the days hot and dry. Despite the heat, summer is considered the best time for wildlife viewing as animals frequently gather around water sources. Visitors during this season also get the opportunity to enjoy river rafting and witness endangered animals and exotic bird species more closely.
Accommodation at Gairal Forest House :
Accommodation at Gairal FRH is comfortable compared to several other forest houses in Corbett. Although the amenities are basic, rooms and attached bathrooms are clean, spacious, and functional. Each room comes with a large double bed and uniform furnishings, ensuring a consistent experience regardless of the room allotted. Accommodation is divided into three sections.
Currently, only the new FRH building and Dormitory are open for bookings, as the old FRH is not available. Rooms are well-ventilated, with western-style bathrooms and 24-hour running water. Hot water is provided through a solar water heating system. Since there is no main electricity supply, only limited solar-powered lighting is available for about two hours in the evening. Therefore, no electrical appliances like fans, televisions, or air conditioners are provided.
